About Us

About us

Picture
West Wickham Methodist Church (WWMC) was founded in the 1930s. We're a friendly, faith-filled congregation and we are sad to be dispersing in January 2024 after 90 years of Methodist worship in West Wickham.

Our circuit superintendent minister, Rev K George provides pastoral oversight and leadership and our local minister, Deacon L MacBean, is tasked with community engagement. Both ministers will continue to work across the Bromley Methodist Circuit when our local congregation closes.

We've been available for baptisms, naming ceremonies, weddings and funerals over the decades and our site has been home to a range of clubs and events that served our local community including Scouts and Guides. We are very pleased that the 8th West Wickham Scouts have been offered a new home with Emmnual URC in The Grove, West Wickham.

Until 1 February 2024, we will remain a member of Churches Together in West Wickham and part of the Bromley Methodist Circuit in the London District of the Methodist Church in Britain.

Causes we have supported

Picture
Thanks to the generosity of our congregation and community groups, we have supported a number of charities over the years, although we were unable to do much during Covid closures. These include:
  • The Smiles Foundation
  • The Robes Project in Bermondsey and their Cold Weather Night Shelter (donations of clothes, bedding and food, including via Hawes Down Primary's Harvest collections), and other work done by the Methodist Church in Bermondsey's  South London Mission
  • Murewa Methodist Church in Zimbabwe (over the years we raised funds to build their church)
  • Action for Children
  • Christian Aid
  • The UK Methodist Church's Mission in Britain fund: We held a collection in December some years
  • Methodist Homes for the Aged
  • All We Can: This is the Methodist Church's relief and development fund. We have had an ongoing small change collection and usually collect at Harvest time as well
  • The Nasio Trust
  • St Christopher's Hospice
  • Oxfam: We collected used stamps on behalf of 8th West Wickham Scouts for the last few years, and before that supported The Leprosy Mission with stamp collections by the group
  • Croydon Refugee Day Centre: We have  collected winter clothing, bags, backpacks, shoes and other items as well as food for the centre to share out as needed
  • Shrublands Trust Foodbank

Flowers for Covid:
During lockdown in 2020, we ran a community project encouraging families to make flowers from plastic and other upcyclable materials and plant these in our garden in memory of those who had lost their lives to Covid.

Community outreach

Over many decades we also supported our wider local community including:

  • hosting Hawes Down Primary School's Year 6 leavers' assembly some recent years in a row and many Harvest and Easter celebrations before that
  • hosting the 8th West Wickham Scouts and 6th West Wickham Guides
  • hiring out our rooms on a regular or occasional basis for meetings and clubs (subject to availability and in line with Methodist policies)

Our future

Sadly we were unable to progress any of our redevelopment plans after the Covid lockdowns and our small congregation decided in early 2023 that we would find individual places of worship elsewhere in January 2024. Please pray for the future of the premises as we decide what to do when trusteeship reverts to the tBromley Methodist Circuit on 1 February 2024.
